About our creative residencies

Our residency programme supports upcoming and established creatives in need of some space and time to develop their practice.

You are in charge of your schedule and the work you make during your stay.

We offer three to four stays a year with opportunity to exhibit in our gallery often resulting from residencies. Our goal is to make space for those in need of respite from the challenges of working in the creative industries. The residency is funded to cover accommodation for the duration of the week-long stay.

FAQ’s

  • The residency is based in our cottage, which normally operates as a holiday let. While there is a desk space available, there is no dedicated studio suitable for large-scale production.
    Artists tend to use the residency best as a time for planning, reflection, research, and site-specific responses to the surrounding landscape, as well as for drawings, models, or preparatory work for larger projects that may be completed later.

  • The residency is funded to cover accommodation for the duration of the week-long stay. You will have the cottage all to yourself.

    Please note that meals, travel, and other personal expenses are not included.

  • While the residency can often lead to an opportunity to showcase work in our gallery, we are keen that our selection process isn’t dependant on work being suitable for gallery exhibition.
    The exhibition process is separate from the residency agreement. Commission is taken on any work sold, making the exhibition a partnership that helps us remain sustainable as a rent paying business on the high street while also championing artists whose work we love and admire. 

  • The submissions are managed by Katie who has a MA from the Royal College of Art. We send the shortlist of applicants to a group of trusted individuals with a background in the arts who give us valuable insights to the work that resonates with them.

    These individuals are professors at some of the top universities in the UK, Art dealers, Academics, fellow gallery owners and Creative professionals. The judging process is lengthy and not taken light-heartedly.

    We take the time to reply to every applicant and are always more than happy to offer feedback at any point during the process.

'I was fortunate to be an artist-in-residence at This House in 2023, and I still feel the benefits of that week today. The residency offers a rare opportunity: a self-directed stay in a beautifully appointed cottage near Stroud, filled with light, original artworks, and plenty of cosy spaces to think, read, or just sit. I arrived with a few books and some drawing materials and spent my days walking, sketching, returning home to cook and read in the bath.

One of the most valuable aspects of the residency was the complete freedom it offered. There was no obligation to produce specific work, but the environment and uninterrupted time naturally encouraged reflection, and I found myself sketching and making notes in response to what I encountered during the week.
