‘The top fields’ by David Phillips
£670
Acrylic on board, walnut frame 21x14.5cm
David Phillips visited the cottage in 2022. In this work a soft bucolic atmosphere feels reminiscent of the curious dips and mounds of the commons surrounding Stroud.
Through interpretations of traditional images, David is interested in drawing together many divers threads and fabricating new images, environments and interventions that mediate between meaning and understanding.
Many of his paintings contain proposals for future landscapes populated with objects that he has designed. This idea of ‘objects in landscape’ is something that he has repeatedly addressed.
Temples, towers, grottos and fountains traditionally formalise and create narrative in space. Figures drift like phantoms through his landscapes bringing a sense multiple possible stories. This layering of time and understanding is intrinsic to his work.
